ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the reader with a brief background on the religion of Islam, and the beliefs and values of its followers. It considers the Islamic perspective on mental health and wellness followed by a review of Islamic perspectives on treatment and healing. The chapter explores case examples that illustrate the integration of indigenous Islamic healing into health and mental health care. It addresses recommendations and future directions for research, interventions, and application. A Muslim is one who follows Islam, or rather one who chooses to submit to, or surrender to the will of Allah (the Arabic word for God). The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), began receiving the message of Islam through the archangel Gabriel in the Arabian Peninsula. Islam is a way of life and Islamic teachings via the Qur’an and Hadith provide guidance for tackling life’s challenges. These challenges can be social, economic, interpersonal, medical or psychological.
