Jonathan Mayhew tended to Arminianism in his theology, in the sense of being sceptical about absolute depravity and entire dependence on God's choice for salvation. Yet, ironically, he saw a tendency to a depraved tyranny in the British implementation of the Stamp Act and discerned providential favour in its repeal, a sign that America was God's designated home of political liberty. Whatever their theological views, however, Congregational ministers were Whig almost to a man in 1765-66.
