ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a summary of common mental health conditions in adults including a summary of their presentations, their aetiology, epidemiology as well as their management.

Conditions included are:

Depression.

Bipolar affective disorder.

Psychosis and schizophrenia.

Anxiety disorders.

Reactions to stressful events including adjustment disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Personality disorders.

This chapter also contains subsections on:

Emergency psychiatry, including information about common psychiatric emergencies such as self-harm and suicide, as well as urgent detention under the mental health act.

Liaison psychiatry, including the interaction of physical health conditions with mental health as well as special considerations for individuals with hepatic or renal impairment.

Assessment and management of disorders related to pregnancy and childbirth, including conditions specific to pregnancy as well as the management of common mental health conditions during pregnancy. This also includes medication used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
