ABSTRACT

Appreciative inquiry (AI) is an asset or strengths-based theoretical and methodological valuable framework useful to planners involved in university-community partnerships. How can AI support university-resident partnerships? First, the author provides a brief history of AI, its five principles, and three simple pillars to answer this question. Next, this chapter employs a case study from a planning course in Salt Lake City, the Westside Leadership Institute, to help planning educators and others look at AI's five “Ds”: definition, discovery, dream, design, and destiny. In the end, some criticisms of AI are presented. Still, the chapter concludes with its utility for planners in university-community partnerships.
