ABSTRACT

The principle of providing a shared living space commonly referred to as a Village represents one of the key requirements that host cities must supply. Careful thought is also necessary as to the post-Games future of a large urban project after it is occupied for a few fleeting weeks while the Olympics and Paralympics are in progess. This chapter traces the development of Olympic Villages for the Summer Games from the perspective of the athletes and provision of services. It also considers the role and interplay in that endeavour of the Organizing Committees (OGOGs) of the day, the Olympic host cities, and governments – local, regional, and national.
