ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present our reflections on the future of research in special education teacher preparation informed by the field's past, thoughtful reviews contained in this Handbook, contemporary issues, and our role as editors of the journal, Teacher Education and Special Education (TESE). We encourage a broader team of teacher educators and researchers to band together with colleagues across related fields and in institutions around the world to improve the quality and production of research in special education teacher preparation. Recommendations focus on attracting a diverse cadre of teachers, preparing them well, and supporting and sustaining teachers in their professional positions. Generating this new knowledge over the next decade has potential for informing policy, practice, and research initiatives that contribute to stronger outcomes for teacher education programs, classroom teachers, and students.
