ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some essential elements of establishing and carrying out a coaching in a hospital setting. It begins by a simple description of the basics of hospital organization, which can be highly complex in large university hospitals and confusing for coaches. Many coaching requests are prescribed by management, which places the coach in an uncomfortable position from the start. The characteristics and pitfalls of prescribed coaching that often induce resistance or refusal are described. This brings the coach to use appropriate strategies to collect the information explaining the request, establish the first steps of a trust relationship with the coachee, and clarify the context, problems, and expectations of all stakes. This process will eventually encourage its acceptance by the recipient.
