ABSTRACT

Korea has developed a new form of transmedia storytelling based on the popularity of webtoons. By employing transmedia storytelling as a theoretical framework, this chapter discusses the significant dimensions featuring the advent of the contemporary Korean film industries. It analyzes the recent process of webtoon-based films, which means that it addresses the ways in which film production companies have utilized webtoons as the source of transmedia storytelling for cultural production. It investigates how webtoon-based transmedia storytelling takes a primary role in local cultural production for both the local film industry and the global cultural markets.
