ABSTRACT

Songwriting provides an outlet for problem-solving, self-discovery, and creative expression. Additionally, songwriting may provide a space where students can grow, process emotions, and share feelings in a positive way. Four themes emerged through data analysis. The data analysis revealed four themes. Freedom emerged as participants described their experiences teaching songwriting in comparison to their other traditional music classes which are product and standard dependent. Connector represented their greatest beneficial outcome of teaching songwriting. Facilitator reflected participants’ descriptions of their perceived role when teaching songwriting. Finally, inclusivity illustrated the ways songwriting provides a place for all students with limited or extensive experience in music to participate. Through a poem, the findings are contextualized through the creativities of songwriting. Implications of this study suggest songwriting is important not only for students’ creative and emotional connection but for teachers instructing songwriting as well.
