ABSTRACT

Middle school places numerous demands upon students of all ability levels, particularly high-ability learners who are expected to complete assignments in several different advanced classes while expanding their horizons through participation in extracurricular activities. During the first session, learners are introduced to Extreme Extended Studies Program (ESP), by participating in an activity called “Getting to Know You.” The goals and objectives of Extreme ESP promote convergent and divergent thinking skills, risk-taking, refinement of thought, and empathy. Extreme ESP is specifically designed to embrace the unique characteristics of high-ability learners. High-ability middle school students, like their peers, are required to navigate their way through a labyrinth of multiple teachers and classes, extracurricular activities, social norms, and family responsibilities.
