ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book outlines the systemic elements of repositories, the functionality of metadata, the expectations and patterns of searchers, and the use cases that demonstrate these principles in action. Systems, at their core, are a series of functions and connections. Digital repository systems house and provide access to digital objects at the same time, enabling those objects to exist while providing the mechanisms for their search process to unfold. While noting that no single tool can be right for everyone working in linked data, the authors introduce potential tools that practitioners can consider, along with their strengths, and some examples of linked data projects in production. While there are substantive differences in audience needs and preferences, practitioners conducting research on audience engagement should also take into account flaws or design elements of system features that may also impact results.
