ABSTRACT

While the evidence base for assessment and intervention for autistic people is expanding, linking research to practice is still a slow process. Since the first edition of this book, however, organizations have provided updated syntheses of the evidence with the goal of disseminating this information to practitioners. This chapter provides an overview of recent evidence appraisals for assessment and intervention programs for social communication and a case study of an autistic child. A discussion of how traditional interventions and goals might run counter to what autistic people want, and considerations practitioners might make when designing social communication interventions with neurodiversity in mind is also presented.
