ABSTRACT

Literature examining the concept of talent transfer is scant. The aim of this chapter was to summarize the limited literature in this area, examine the current understanding of the factors that contribute to athletes’ transfer between sports, and explore the benefits and challenges for athletes and sports involved in the transfer process. In the process, we examined current transfer initiatives in non-disabled and Para contexts, and shared some critical points for consideration both from a practical lens and as directions for future research. These include i) designing a system that is athlete-center focused, ii) which includes early provisional classification, iii) considering athletes’ psychological attributes, iv) implementing deliberate programming strategies, and v) avoiding a singular focus to transfer.
