ABSTRACT

The internationalization of higher education in Vietnam has been high on agenda at national and institutional levels and contributed to the transformation of the Vietnamese higher education system over the past decades. Locating this process within historical and contemporary contexts, this chapter discusses the latest development of internationalization of higher education in the country. It argues that while Vietnam has made several achievements in transforming its higher education system to meet the need of the national economic and sociocultural development, internationalization activities are still fragmented and unsustainable and an appropriately tailored model of internationalization is needed for the country. The chapter holds that as a former colony of multiple colonial empires, Vietnam has experienced a complex post-colonial higher education development caused by the tensions between colonial legacies, indigenous values and international standards that shape the structural setting as well as influence the process of internationalization of higher education in the country.
