ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of international work-integrated learning (IWIL) within a global context. It explores the role of students, institutions, and employers in ensuring quality IWIL experiences and the intricacies of organizing IWIL opportunities for students. It draws upon the authors’ experience in planning, developing, and implementing complex IWIL programs that facilitate over 5,000 international WIL experiences across more than 60 countries annually. We provide guidance relating to student and employer readiness, ethical engagement, immigration requirements, risk management, and partnership development, highlighting the value of experience for stakeholders, while creating sustainable systems for successful IWIL from a practical standpoint. Various forms of IWIL are incorporated into the discussion, including examples of inclusive IWIL programs that underlie the discussion on the ethics of IWIL.
