ABSTRACT

Men are often described as unemotional. This chapter reflects on this through re-analysis of data collected with young men living in urban informal settlements in eThekwini Municipality, South Africa. It suggests that despite a dominant narrative of men’s limited emotionality, men in private settings of in-depth, one-on-one interviews and programmatic interventions could be emotional. This emotionality may form the basis for wider change and a shift towards more gender equitable masculinities.
