ABSTRACT

In this introduction to the text, we refer to sport management's past in order to give perspective on its future – specifically with respect to digital technologies. We illustrate that the overlap between the sport industry and digital innovations has grown, and will continue to grow in the decades to come. We make the case that while the production of new innovations has pushed forth at an impressive pace, sport management researchers have only recently been intentional about studying these technologies and charting their impact on theory and practice. Thus, at this critical juncture, we seek to formally assemble as much of the knowledge we have accrued at the intersection of sport management and digital technology as possible. In so doing, we hope to provide a foundation for the next decade of research that explores this overlap. To that end, we describe the various domains covered in this text and stress four important conditions that qualify what readers should, and should not, expect to see throughout the Handbook.
