ABSTRACT

The chapter provides an overview of Icelandic theatre in the first decades of the twenty-first century. Particular focus is placed on the one hand on different responses of the two leading theatre institutions – the Icelandic National Theatre and the Reykjavik City Theatre – to the national identity crisis caused by the financial crash of 2008; and on the other hand, on a couple of case studies of independent theatre and performance groups experimenting with the role and situation of the audience.
