ABSTRACT

Physical education plays a part in almost all young people’s formal education. However, there have been persistent and contentious debates about the subject (O’Connor, 2018), many of which have centred on the purpose and nature of physical education in schools. Some of these have focused on the relationship between physical education and sport, the place of sport within physical education and the pedagogy used to teach sport within physical education (the word ‘sport’ within the physical education curriculum is used in this chapter; however, the term ‘games’ is commonly used in many curricula).
