ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a broad practical guide to the introduction of Cockpit Resource Management (CRM) training to a flying organization. It shows that the principles are the same, regardless of whether it is a small charter company or a large airline. The chapter deals with establishing the need for CRM training and then explores whether the training program should be bought or built. It argues that the ultimate success of the entire program hinges upon the commitment and expertise of the instructional staff charged with teaching CRM. The chapter looks at building the program, training those who will conduct CRM training, the integration of the concepts into the entire training environment, introducing Line Oriented Flight Training (LOFT) and evaluating the program. LOFT, is the conduct of real time en route exercises in flight simulators. The more realism that is achieved in LOFT, the more acceptances it receives from crews and their perception is that the value is higher.
