ABSTRACT

This chapter illuminates an often-hidden aspect of culture in the United States—the general cultural themes of White men in America—and interprets them in relation to their implications for development of inclusive leadership. Because this is the culture of the dominant group leading most corporations and organizations, the literature colludes by often disguising White male culture as American or business culture. This does not serve to help White male leaders understand their own culture and to know that others assimilate to their culture daily. The White Men’s Caucus, a four-day intensive diversity learning laboratory for White men, is examined as one avenue for White men to gain an understanding of themselves and their own culture. These insights can allow White men to partner more fully with others by understanding the complexity in which others live. It also can free White men to step outside their cultural box when it serves them to become better leaders and partners. The chapter ends with practical tips for White men.
