ABSTRACT

In this chapter I outline the importance of understanding the relationship between diversity and inequality at the societal level and argue that inclusive leaders must address inequality in order to support greater inclusiveness within society. I also outline a conceptualization of what inclusiveness would entail in terms of culture, structure, and identity, which are three indicators that have often been used to measure the extent of assimilation or integration of multiple groups within a society. Given the relationship between diversity and inequality, I also outline some of the challenges that make creating inclusive societies more problematic, and then I discuss the role of inclusive leaders and steps that they can take to help create more inclusive societies. Such steps necessarily include political skills as well as managerial ones.
