ABSTRACT

The chapter begins by addressing the links between education and the inception of the modern Olympic Games, before moving into a discussion of how Olympic Education is typically defined and understood. This sets up an exploration of the Games-time education programmes of Sydney 2000, London 2012, and Tokyo 2020. London 2012’s Get Set programme is the key focus for this chapter, which discusses Get Set as a vision-critical part of the 2012 Games, and includes an investigation of the successes and criticisms of the programme. The importance of Sydney 2000 as a forerunner of London 2012 is explored, alongside its ground-breaking approach to the Paralympic Games. The chapter looks ahead to Tokyo 2020, positioning its Yoi Don! education programme as an innovative new direction for the delivery of Olympic and Paralympic Education by host nations.
