ABSTRACT

New Politics theory is concerned with the rise of a cluster of new political issues and related changes in participatory dispositions and behavior. New Politics parties should therefore display the essential elements of new politics on three dimensions: program, political style, and electoral profile. The radical new politics-oriented sections are therefore largely excluded from their electoral market as soon as a genuine New Politics party has emerged. The link to the underlying causes of the new politics is quite evident: First, an intact environment caters to aesthetic needs. Second, persons who are less concerned about the functioning of the economy are likely to shift their attention to the protection of nature. Empirically and logically, new politics is related to some aspects of traditional left-wing policies. The foregoing analysis has demonstrated that our proposed model represents a suitable tool for identifying parties that owe their 'Gestalt' primarily to shifts towards the new politics.
