ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the study of activities that are considered to require intelligence. It proceeds by producing theories about how humans perform these Intelligent activities and then tests them using computer programs based on these theories. The idea of an expert system was based on the fact that many experts have much well-organized knowledge that they bring to bear on a problem, that they tend to do only one type of problem-solving, and that an AI technique could be used to capture this activity. In a design situation, for example, the system can be run on many different sets of design requirements and can produce results and provide examples of expert quality designs much quicker than a human expert. An expert system can provide predictive power in a manufacturing situation in the form of knowledge-based simulation. Experts from more highly developed countries or multinational corporations can be consulted to compensate for the scarcity of experts.
