ABSTRACT

The Fostering a Community of Learners (FCL) project was Camelot for those of us privileged enough to participate. As former FCL student Florencia Tuaumu remarked, “It was almost like a homecoming of sorts…it was something we had always been able to do but never actually had the chance… and now, the possibilities were seemingly endless (2004).” Florencia’s remark conveys the essence of a silver thread that ran through all of Ann Brown’s work — a deep passion and commitment to create the ways and means for young people to learn to use their minds well. It is therefore fitting that this volume should end with a chapter dedicated to her work in the classroom, and composed by some of her most treasured collaborators — the teachers and students. The authors of this chapter, Ash and Rutherford, were founding teachers for the FCL project as it was implemented in Oakland, California. In composing this chapter we drew upon the wisdom of several former students and co-designers of the FCL project: Florencia, Hana, Jonathan, Adaoha, and Nwaoha1. Together we are proud to tell our Ann Brown story2.
