ABSTRACT

The image of a young child curled up in her father’s arms while he reads a book to her is a hard one to fault. The child (let us call her Sophie), soothed by the sound of her father’s storytelling voice, is fully absorbed in the experience. As her father reads and talks about the book, Sophie looks at the pictures steadfastly, pulling her thumb out of her mouth on occasion to provide an answer, ask a question herself, or make a comment.
