ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION TO RECTAL DOSAGE FORMS AND SUPPOSITORIES In this era, various medicated rectal dosage forms are available in the market such as, creams, ointments, gels, douches, aerosol foams, enemas, and suppositories. Historically, the use of suppositories was referred to in the ancient times of Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Suppository was one of the several choices of drug delivery systems that were suitable, especially for very young children and elderly people, a notion first recorded by Hippocrates, when oral drug delivery system was found to be difficult for these particular groups of people (1).
