ABSTRACT

Optimal wound healing requires a precise wound edge approximation and an adequate and equally displaced tensile force. The balance between maximal suture support and minimal foreign body reactivity provides sound healing conditions. Surgical knots represent the highest density of foreign material in the wound. Therefore, subcuticular sutures are often used for clean wound closure. They produce a better scar appearance and have a low rate of complications. The tensile force is symmetrically dispersed along the whole length of the wound and the healing conditions are almost ideal.
