ABSTRACT

This chapter refers to the concept of sexuality in its broadest terms. It then looks at the Armistead Centre, identifying the needs of the lesbian, homosexual, bisexual and transgender communities. The chapter adapts from the field of palliative care, who lead the way in dissemination of knowledge and understanding around sexuality. Sexuality comes in to all aspects of existence, involving biological and social aspects of the body. It is complex and contextual. If the definitions are placed within the context of mental health–substance use, their importance becomes vital in the care of the individual experiencing mental health–substance use problems. Such conditions have a significant physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual effect upon all aspects of a person's sexuality. In all its diversity, it is inevitably affected. Professionals have a key role to play in helping the individual and family resolve difficulties they may be experiencing with their sexuality.
