6.1 Introduction Th is chapter is about a tool that enables you to visualize and analyze the whole, each part, and their interactions. We call this tool Architecture and believe it would have made our six wise men in “Th e Blind Men and the Elephant” story realize the singular nature of what they described in six diff erent ways. We write this chapter fi rmly believing that traditional systems engineering (TSE) unintentionally promoted attitudes very similar to our friends and their elephant; and that simply lacing the pieces together was not suffi cient as it did not account for emergence and the unique eff ects of scale; properties that architectures attempt to include and illustrate. In short, we believe this tool has great promise to assist in enterprise systems engineering (ESE) by enabling the rigorous and repeatable description of the Enterprise and its impacts.
