ABSTRACT

Emergencies can occur with any kind of dermatological surgery, irrespective of the patients’ laboratory profiles. The operating surgeon should therefore be well versed in identifying these complications and their timely management. In the era of modern dermatosurgery, the operating rooms should be well equipped with emergency medication and equipment, and the staff should be well trained in emergency medicine. Dermatosurgical emergencies are mainly of two types: emergencies encountered during dermatosurgical procedures and dermatosurgical conditions that require emergency interventions. Anaphylaxis, vasovagal syncope, lidocaine allergy, hypertensive emergencies, and status epilepticus are a few medical conditions that can manifest during dermatosurgical procedures, and dermatosurgeons should have knowledge about them so as to initially manage such conditions before expert help is available. Bleeding, abscess formation, blister formation, cryoblister, bleeding from varicose veins, and traumatic nail avulsion are a few of the complications that commonly occur in the dermatosurgical operating room and require immediate attention. Well-equipped emergency operating rooms, a good knowledge of dermatosurgery, and training in emergency basic life support and advanced cardiac life support courses make a dermatosurgeon more confident in identifying and managing these emergencies.
