ABSTRACT

This chapter covers various applications of edge computing based on artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT). Initially, an introduction to edge computing is provided along with a comparative study of cloud computing and edge computing. Further, the chapter explains application of edge computing in various domains like smart cities, smart homes, smart homes, healthcare, food, and industrial IoT. The creation of smart cities has been achieved due to the use of AI and IoT in conjunction with edge computing. The chapter also includes specific applications in the domain of smart cities such as parking, water management, waste management, fleet management, air quality monitoring systems, and vehicular applications. The smart parking system is implemented using various surveillance cameras and image detection systems along with machine learning algorithms that provide information of free parking slots and help in efficient utilization of parking space. The smart water system includes devices like smart water meters, water quality sensors, and water control actuators that perform the planning and management of water. Smart waste management companies optimize their pickup schedules, reduce the number of unnecessary trips, and improve the overall efficiency of the collection process using the smart dustbins. Edge computing is also useful for monitoring the vehicle location and status in real time. Edge computing has numerous applications in management of vehicles like managing the dwell time of vehicles. Smart homes provide applications like safety and security, energy savings, and providing comfort to users. The chapter emphasizes that bringing computing on the edge can help reduce the network traffic, power consumption, overall cost, and latency and increase performance. The chapter also explains benefits, use cases, challenges involved, and various vendors in the area of Industrial IoT.
