ABSTRACT

Studies have revealed that remarkable amounts of essential nutrients and phytochemicals are seen abundantly in unconsumed part of fruits viz., seeds, peels, and pomace. Dietary fibers, phenolic and bioactive compounds are well studied in citrus fruit waste. Fruit waste when left untreated has led to various environmental problems and objectionable odor formation. To reduce this, citrus wastes are subjected to thermal, non-thermal techniques, which may disrupt the phytochemicals present in the waste. Therefore, bio valorization of citrus fruit waste is a procedure that follows the bioconversion of citrus waste and biomass into energy, chemicals, fuels, and materials focused mainly on environmental indicators and sustainability goals. Biomolecules likes vitamins, amino acids, oils, fibers, lipids, soluble sugars, and organic acids are found to be abundant in citrus peel waste. Bio valorization of these biomolecules systematically provides economic gain and environmental protection. This chapter summarizes the bio-valorization of citrus waste into augmented commodity from the citrus fruit processing industries for sustainable socio-economic development and to maintain environmental stability.
