ABSTRACT

A burn is a partial or full thickness damage to the skin, caused by the action of heat, electricity or a chemical reaction. The size is expressed in the percentage of total body surface area. The thickness of the skin is of influence: a dorsal hand burn is usually deeper than a volar burn. In the case of superficial burn the skin is red, sometimes with blisters, there is a rapid capillary refill and the patient is in a lot of pain. A deep dermal injury shows a cloudy aspect of the skin, sometimes with blisters. Treatment should be given in consultation with your National Poison Control Center. In the case of hydrogen fluoride injection, treat with calcium gluconate burn gel and subcutaneous injection with a 10% solution of calcium gluconate. If a fasciotomy of endangered muscle compartments is performed, the sudden release of myoglobin from the damaged skeletal muscle can cause renal insufficiency.
