ABSTRACT

An exploration on the indigenous ethnomedicinal plants was assessed among the ethnic groups (Palliyars) in the Grizzled Giant Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary. Srivilliputhur, Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu. As an outcome of the present investigation, 219 plants (204 plants were collected and 15 plants' parts/extracts were procured) belonging to 176 genera and 78 families were recorded. It was astonishing to note that the enumerated 219 plants are used to cure as many as 57 different types of human maladies. A maximum of 28 plants are used to treat cold and cough, followed by 19 plants as refrigerant, 16 plants for treating stomachache, 15 plants as remedy for eczema, boils, wounds/ weapon injury/thorn injury, 14 plants for treating headache, 14 plants for curing fever, and 13 plants are used as remedy for rheumatic complaints. The medicinal plants used by Palliyar tribes are arranged alphabetically, followed by family name, local name, parts used, mode of drug preparation, medicinal uses, and dosage.
