ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes a hybrid indicator as a benchmark recommending a sustainable university campus with eco-friendly/green practices in life. The lifestyle of the people living on the campus of National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NITRKL) along with Indian average lifestyle and their consequent impacts with respect to environmental and social sustainability are the foundation of the proposed lifestyle indicator. The chapter has consolidated three pillars of sustainability, namely environmental, social, and economic. The proposed lifestyle indicator uses carbon, water, income, educational expenditure, health care expenditure, and population footprints of the campus in the context of the Indian average as the basis for its estimation. The ideal value of the proposed indicator should not be exceeding 1.0 for ensuring a green and sustainable urban dwelling. Present study also provides a schematic of the survey ‘EnvoQuant’ as a part of practice/ethics/guidelines regarding the four-wheeler usage by the people on campus. Some exigencies, like rainwater harvesting and organic farming initiatives taken up in the campus, are also mentioned in this chapter, which can enhance the green practice in life anywhere in the globe.
