ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is connecting all daily life objects and creating an opportunity to interact among them via Internet and with various new technologies that make things or objects smart. They are the basic foundation of the smart city or green city. The aim of a smart city is to improve urban system functionalities, promoting sustainable development and mainly improving the quality of citizen’s daily life. In current world, many smart cities are implemented and many are in the developmental phase. Thus, privacy and security become a major concern, and to develop solutions, challenges and issues in it should be identified. The cybersecurity traditional protection techniques cannot be directly applied in smart devices due to the dynamic, scalability and heterogeneity characteristics of a smart city. Also, it is important to have prior knowledge about privacy and security threats while a new system or mechanism is designed. This chapter explains the overview of a smart city and discusses the privacy and security issues that are present in applications of the smart city, and also corresponding requirements needed to build a secure and stable smart city are discussed. Finally, existing technologies for protection are discussed and further directions for research are identified.
