ABSTRACT

High lipid levels and contents found in ovaries and pyloric caeca of Asterias rubens (Oudejans et al. 1980) point to an important rôle of lipids in the reproduction of this common asteroid. Detailed information on the changes in lipid class profiles (total, neutral and polar lipids, triacyl glycerols, free fatty acids, neutral ether lipids, sterols and steryl esters) during the annual reproductive cycle both for the pyloric caeca as the storage organs and the ovaries as the utilizing organs has been published recently elsewhere (Oudejans & Van der Sluis 1979).
