ABSTRACT

We tried to apply a fuzzy logic control method to nuclear power plant control. This section describes successful actual application of a fuzzy logic control system (FLCS) to the feedwater control of the advanced thermal reactor (ATR) at Fugen Nuclear Power Station (165 MW electrical power output). The system operates in the range below 20% of the rated reactor power and uses fuzzy logic to adjust the steam drum water level to a set point by means of controlling feedwater flow rate to the steam drum. The development work has been carried out since 1987 and a new water level control system using fuzzy logic went on line in July 1992. This is probably the first attempt to employ fuzzy logic control in the main control system of a practical-scale nuclear power plant. The introduction of the FLCS as compared with a conventional single-element proportional-integral (PI) control system has enabled operators to more simply deal with the steam drum water level control.
