ABSTRACT

Lycium barbarum glycoconjugates arguably form the most bioactive and best-documented phytochemical fraction of Lycium barbarum berries. Their anti-aging and health-related properties, such as antioxidant, hypoglycemic, probiotic and immunostimulatory effects, to name a few, are supported by pre-clinical and a few clinical studies but may vary with methods of plant cultivation, extraction protocols, administration routes and use level. Unlike other goji products, LBPs don't yet have an established place in the nutraceutical market. Nevertheless, as the interest in this biopolymeric fraction of fructus lycii continues to grow and more pre-clinical and clinical data become available, Lycium barbarum glycoconjugates may soon find its fit among the most effective functional foods.
