ABSTRACT
Merely verbal disputes may be viewed as being only apparently or superficially conflictual, but they might also be seen as genuine conflicts. This fact is especially important in contemporary times, when language itself seems to be a political battleground. This chapter surveys some theories of verbal disputes and then gives a series of critiques of the philosophical and political program of ameliorative analysis, which involves redefining words to try to meet political objectives.
