ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the nature of politics and the political. We begin by considering three common approaches: that politics is essentially about power; that politics is essentially about conflict; and that politics is essentially about order. None of these approaches are completely satisfying. We also evaluate some frequently made arguments to the effect that everything is political. We close with a discussion of whether we can infer concrete political conclusions from the nature of politics.
