ABSTRACT

Finally, some writers have minimized or attempted to do entirely away with the notion of belief in explaining political behavior and outcomes. This chapter considers the political expressivism of Michael Hannon and the practical ideology theory of Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò. We note something general: for any theory of sincere political belief which is meant to explain political action, we can construct a theory of insincere, self-interested political action. However, I don’t find such theories convincing, and I close the chapter by explaining several reasons why.
