ABSTRACT

Quick association check (QuACk) has been developed with the intention of addressing key methodological issues in ergonomics science found lacking in existing methods for capturing mental models. This chapter aims to illustrate where and how methodological issues have been addressed, including steps taken towards analytic validity, behaviour pattern reliability and intra-analyst repeatability. It sets out to demonstrate the benefit of iterative development through a case study approach, by demonstrating the resulting improvements. The chapter discusses the potential to apply the findings of QuACk to energy-reducing strategies. QuACk was developed to fulfil the need of a quick, resource-light method for exploring association between mental models of, and user behaviour with, domestic heating systems. The chapter focuses on making explicit the links between user mental models, behaviour and design at both the control device and the heating system levels.
