ABSTRACT

The emotion of anger is central to many inter- and intrapersonal disorders. Anger is the emotional state which most often accompanies and facilitates aggressive behavior. Anger can also be viewed as one emotional pole of Cannon's fight-or-flight response, as one style of mobilizing the organism's resources to cope with stress. The evidence is mounting that chronic anger and aggressiveness are at the root of many physical diseases and of much personal unhappiness. When self-control meditation was added to the standard regimen, substantial alterations in the client's anger were recorded. He reported himself to be less angry and to have engaged in less angry behavior during self-control meditation as well as having been more able to cope effectively with anger-provoking situations. Within the present study self-control meditation was always instituted immediately following a week of standard meditation which always followed a baseline period.
