ABSTRACT

To strengthen the high thrust radial gate pier, a new type of steel reinforced concrete pier structure is proposed in this paper. The shape steel is used to replace the fanshaped steel reinforcement in the conventional reinforced concrete pier. By using finite element software, a 3D nonlinear finite element model is developed to analyze the performance of the steel reinforced concrete pier with respect to deformation, stress, crack development, and bearing capacity of the pier. It can be concluded that the performance of the steel reinforced concrete pier is similar to that of the conventional reinforced concrete pier. But the bearing capacity and ductility of the reinforced concrete pier are significantly improved, which shows that it is worth further studying the application of the steel reinforced concrete structure in the radial gate pier.
