ABSTRACT

It is well-known that the exceptional properties exhibited by Zinc Oxide (ZnO) are inter-correlated with its morphological states. Therefore, this has prompted intense focus on the design of ZnO nano-architectures and its formation mechanisms especially by low-temperature and environmentally conservative methods. Many literatures have reported on the formation and application of ID ZnO nanorods and nanowires. Recently, a lot of research interest in the controlled design of 2D ZnO nanostructures has been shown by researchers. In this chapter, after the introduction of ZnO general properties, discussion of the formation mechanisms of 2D ZnO nanostructures, its roles and properties as well as its applications are described. By using low-temperature synthesis techniques, multi-functional architecturally designed ZnO nanostructures could be used for fabrication of flexible device applications such as solar cells, photocatalysts and optoelectronics devices.
